I work for a publication that recently updated its style guide. When discussing issues of reproductive health (e.g., menstruation or pregnancy) we are no longer allowed to use the word "women." We must instead use "vulva owners" or "menstruators" or "people with uteruses." I am all for making all readers feel seen, but this change is dehumanizing. Just as I would never refer to a trans person by his or her body parts or processes, I don't appreciate being defined by mine.
